Student voice - Your Voice Matters!

Mental Health Awareness

The aim of this fortnight's student voice activity is to identify areas which need to be addressed in relation to: whether popular misconceptions identified by Time to Change are prevalent at Aylesford School.

Awareness of the mental health organisations and campaigns that are there to support and raise awareness for young people; whether students knew where to go for support; how willing they would be to talk about mental health issues at school.

Why the research is necessary:

Mental illness affects one in four adults in the UK, and one in ten young people. Time to Change is England’s largest mental health awareness campaign and we are working within Wrotham School to support the campaign’s main aims. Our aims for 2016-17 are shared and, according to the Time to Change website, are:
• Improve adult public attitudes towards people with mental health problems by 2%.
• Increase the number of people with lived experience of mental health problems who are empowered to take action to challenge stigma and discrimination.
• Ensure that people with mental health problems report reduced levels of discrimination in their work place, in mental health services, and in personal relationships.
• Secure changes to policy, practice and organisational culture in order to reduce stigma and discrimination in the longer term.
The idea behind working in schools is to change adult attitudes through greater understanding at a young age. We are aiming to improve attitudes and change the culture at Aylesford School so that it is more inclusive and understanding of mental illness and the effects of stigma and discrimination.
