Aylesford win league and secure final spot

26 February 2024

Aylesford win league and secure final spot

After an impressive league season which has seen us beat St Simon Stock, Cornwallis and MGS. Aylesford had one more hurdle in the way, and this was in the form of the current Maidstone champions Oakwood. For 55 minutes we (Aylesford) were brilliant, with goals from Arthur and Lucas after a beautiful cross from Riley. Ollie led the line well and was a real pain for the Oakwood centre backs which led to the first goal for Aylesford.
A lapse in concentration from Aylesford, let Oakwood back in, this resulted in a nervy finish as the game finished 3-2. Nathan (Aylesford’s) captain has become a real leader and this has helped to drive the Aylesford team forward.

Aylesford 2-1 SSS
Aylesford 5-1 Cornwallis
Aylesford 4-0 MGS

Every single player has been brilliant this season. Congratulations on making the final and well deserved win!

Year 10 rugby unbeaten in Maidstone for another year!

8 February 2024

Year 10 rugby unbeaten in Maidstone for another year!

Last night the year 10 rugby team had their Maidstone District final against Malling at Aylesford Bulls. With a few players missing from the teamsheet this week it was always going to be a close game and as ever the game against Malling did not disappoint. Having played each other in the final for the last 3 years running it is always a great game.

Early effort from Aylesford

As ever the Aylesford team put in the effort early on and went over for the first score of the day after the ball was well worked out to the wing, converted by the ever faithful boot of Charlie Morgan.

Malling replied quickly with a couple of crunching tackles being made on the way for a quick turnover and went over for their first score of the day.

With Aylesford energized they sought to open the gap up and give themselves some breathing space and with some excellent running and control. The ball was worked wide onto the right wing for a second score of the day. Aylesford were hungry for more and went over twice more in quick succession after half time, Malling replied twice with their own scores.

Magic Morgan

Aylesford had the final say with a length of the field try and comfortably converted again by Morgans boot.

The game was played in the way it should have and the result reflects the quality of the game and the teams playing. With a final score 27-17 to Aylesford!

Well done Aylesford!

Please congratulate the team on their success this year, with a great cup run resulting in making the Kent final for the first time and remaining undefeated in Maidstone for another year.

This year’s results are Played = 10 Won = 9 Lost = 1

Year 10 put on an amazing performance at rugby final but kept from trophy

22 November 2023

Year 10 put on an amazing performance at rugby final but kept from trophy

On 21 November the year 10 rugby team had their Kent rugby final at Gravesend Rugby Club against Tunbridge Wells Grammar.

Amazing performance

The performance that the team last night was amazing, they carried well, tackled well and didn’t let their heads drop throughout the game. A very evenly contested first half, with both teams trading scores and coming in at half time for 17-5 to Tunbridge Wells. With Aylesford making a few changes we looked to put pressure on Tunbridge Wells, however with them bringing on 7 sets of fresh legs in the second half kept us pinned back in our own half for much of the second half. The defence on the try line for a number of minutes was a huge demonstration of the desire the boys had to keep the scoring, however after a few minutes of constant attack they finally went over. With some tiring bodies from Aylesford and the organised pay of Tunbridge Wells they went over a few more times.

Commitment and resilience

With minutes to go Aylesford found there rhythm once more and finished the game with a well worked tried in the corner. Unfortunately we came up against a very strong Tunbridge Wells side, that put us under a lot of pressure early on in the game and kept the pressure on throughout. I cannot fault the teams commitment and resilience to keep going.

rugby22.jpg

The journey this team as been on this year in the cup run has been phenomenal and to get to the final in the first place was a huge achievement and competing against some top grammar schools along the way was no mean feat. Rightly so the boys were disappointed to come away without the trophy but all should be extremely proud of their achievements so far.

Final Score Aylesford 12 – 46 Tunbridge Wells

If you see any of the following please congratulate them on a great performance, thank you to all the parents and staff that were able to come and cheer the team on.

Rugby success - Aylesford School beat Oakwood Park Grammar 47-12

27 September 2023

Rugby success - Aylesford School beat Oakwood Park Grammar 47-12

Last night the year 10 rugby team had their first Kent Cup match of the year against Oakwood Park Grammar. With 16 players available up against an Oakwood side that brought 22 players we knew it was going to be a competitive fixture.

A good start to the game

We started well with an early score in the first few minutes only to have it returned moments after with Oakwood converting to give them the lead by 2. After that Aylesford settled down, played some good rugby moving the ball well, we got on the score sheet twice more and both well converted by Charlie Morgan off the tee. This gave us a 19 – 7 lead into half time.

Leading at half time

Second half came about quickly with Aylesford looking to build on their first half performance. A long kick off to Oli C gave him plenty of space to run and after a chip over lead to a great chase and resulted in another Aylesford score. Oakwood fought back quickly and after few missed tackles went over for their second score of the game. Now 26-12 Aylesford looked to put the pressure on even more through strong ball carrying from Oli, Charlie, M and Rylie B. This kept Oakwood pinned in their own half for much of the second half, after some lovely phases of play Riley DS showed some great composure to step the last defender and score under the posts.

With Oakwood ringing the changes as the game went on Aylesford looked to put the game to bed and after some huge tackles in the middle of the field lead to a quick turnover and Aylesford going over twice more.

Final score

Final score Aylesford 47-12 Oakwood. A really strong win for the team against a good opponent and we now progress into the next round with opponents yet to be confirmed. Please congratulate the team on a huge effort yesterday. Thank you to all the staff that were able to come out and support the team really did appreciate it.

Finley selected for England Men’s YDP Goalkeeping Development Camp

Finley is currently part of the under 15 Charlton Squad and trains and plays with them through the hybrid programme run at the club which aligns his ability to play whilst maintaining his education. He has also had the opportunity to train with the 1st team squad as. Finley has been given a scholarship 2 years early as a goalkeeper. We are already extremely proud of the character he displays to maintain the workload of training, playing and his education.

Year 8 are through to Maidstone district football final

Our year 8 football team are through to the Maidstone District final after beating SST 3-2 yesterday afternoon.

The team showed great character throughout the game especially after coming from 1-0 down inside the first 5 minutes. Some fantastic individual performances and three superb goals from Mason Hudson, Alfie McGuire and Freddie Attwater secured our place in the final.

A twin achievement on the football pitch

A twin achievement on the football pitch

Football achievements from twins, Evie & Luke

Evie N from year 10 was selected for a National Talent Camp at Warwick University this weekend, as the England Talent Pathway team have been watching her over the last year and they have been impressed with her performances. Evie had a game against Wales at St George’s Park on Monday.

Evie had a great time this weekend and it is such an achievement to have been picked to train and play with England U15’s. She did amazingly well with some of the best talent across the country.

Luke N got back from Abu Dhabi yesterday, he went as part of the u15 Charlton team. They had a really good tournament and they made the final against Valencia.

They played really well but sadly lost 1-0. Luke still had a great time and a great experience meeting lots of new people and enjoying new experiences. Whilst he was away Luke even did his school work!

Well done Evie & Luke!

Remote Learning - Monday 12th December

12 December 2022

Remote Learning - Monday 12th December

The school has reverted to remote learning procedures due to full school closure because of severe weather conditions. Please note, whilst we will endeavour to deliver remote lessons where possible, not all staff will be able to deliver full lessons due to their own childcare issues. Secondly, where a class currently has a long-term cover teacher, or supply, they may not have access to a teacher for that particular lesson due to the short term nature of the closure. We hope to be open tomorrow. We will try to deliver live lessons today - these will take place today, lessons 1-4:

9:00- 9:50 - lesson 1
10:00- 10-50 - Lesson 2
11:15- 12:05 - Lesson 3
12:15 - 1:05 - Lesson 4

The afternoon should be used as a Character Development Afternoon and students should pick a Character strength to demonstrate and send pictures in if they can. There are some ideas on the link below

Character Development Activities

Please see below for instructions on how your child can access their remote learning lessons / resources, this has key sections adapted from our current online learning policy:

Remote Education Provision: Information for Parents
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education.

The Remote Curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home
A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from Aylesford School’s standard approach, while we prepare for a longer period of remote teaching. In the first couple if days we will be sending home tasks to do for each subject. We will aim to deliver live lessons in all subjects although this is subject to staff availability and logistics in practical subjects. We will endeavour to teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school.

Remote teaching and study time each day
If the school is closed beyond today, we will provide live online lessons – these will follow a pupil’s normal timetable (5 lessons per day). The lessons will be shortened to 50 minutes instead of an hour to allow for students and staff to have a comfort break and prepare for the next lesson. We will also have a character day each week until we return to school to allow for learning that is not computerised or on screen – this sits in line with our school vision ‘to provide high quality academic and character education’.

Accessing Remote Education
Students will access their lessons, work, and resources on the Microsoft Teams platform. Initially, students can expect to have work set as assignments to complete, following the assignments tab; this is no different to how the currently access their homework. Live lessons should be accessible after the first day of interruption, and if there are further school closures within a short period. Lessons will be delivered using the meeting function, this is the most safe and secure platform at our disposal and is why we are utilising this over alternative platforms; only recognised students with correct account details can access lessons.

In the event of the school having to revert to remote learning students will need to login to their office 365 accounts to access Microsoft Teams to be able to access live lessons or work set. All students have been given login details and should know them; if your child claims to not know or forgotten their account details, please could you follow the link below to request the details to be reset.

Due to potentially high demand, please allow a reasonable amount of time for our ICT manager to work through requests.

Part of the. The Character Education Trust is a multi-academy trust (MAT) that exists to provide outstanding education in both primary and secondary schools.

Supporting Pupils who do not have technology at home
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

Parents should inform us if there is no internet access at home or if students do not have appropriate hardware to access online lessons/learning.
The school will issue or lend devices that enable internet connection (Laptop, routers or dongles). Parents are expected to sign a contract.
Aylesford School will send printed materials through the post where necessary.

How pupils will be taught remotely

Aylesford School use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely in order to meet every child’s learning needs:

·      live teaching (online lessons)

·      recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons, video/audio recordings made by teachers)

·      printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)

·      textbooks and reading books pupils have at home

·      commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences

·      long-term project work and/or internet research activities

Engagement and Feedback

All students at Aylesford school are expected to engage fully with lessons whether in school or learning remotely.
All students who are learning remotely are expected to attend online mentor time at 8:30 every day.
Mentors will complete a register which will go to our attendance officer. The pastoral team; Attendance officer (Mrs Bartholomew), pastoral support managers (Mrs Severn and Mrs Hodgson), Progress Leaders and class teachers will follow up students who are not present. Follow up will initially be with a text, email, or phone call. Where there is little or no engagement after 3 days, home visits might be necessary.
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments. For example, whole class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. During periods of remote learning our normal assessment policy will be followed- two assessed pieces of work per term followed by Levelling Up.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils. A member of the SEN department will be in regular contact to help and support as well as the pastoral team.

Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

9 September 2022

Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

All at Aylesford School are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family at the sad time.

The Queen was an extraordinary role model for people around the world and for everyone at Aylesford School.

Today we had an assembly with all students this morning and held a two minute silence as a mark of respect.

Miss Kelvie talked to Heart Radio this morning about her memories of the Queen visiting Aylesford School in 2019:

The Queen visits Aylesford School

We were very fortunate to have had the Queen visit Aylesford School in November 2019 - just a few months before Covid hit. She landed on our school field by helicopter before visiting the Royal British Legion Village which the school has links with.

Queen.PNG

She spoke to our students who had been reading with the residents of The Royal British Legion.

One of our students voiced the sentiments of many on that day saying ‘it was the best day of his life!’

Our Queen was a role model and a true inspiration - the epitome of good character - and as a school community we are assembling this morning to think of her and her family

Year 11 Student opens own Business!

20 January 2022

Year 11 Student opens own Business!

I am year 11 student from Aylesford school and I have opened my own small business on Etsy.

It was within the summer of 2021 when it all started, we were all in quarantine and learning from home- I know right, how fun was that? ? I was in my normal GCSE Business lesson on Zoom, our teacher explained to us that we have to start thinking about our own business and what sort of things we would want to sell, we had the amazing task of writing a 2500-word Assignment on the whole thing- fun! I went through many business ideas but nothing really interested me, I wanted to do something that was very creative and different, so therefore I kept looking into different potential ideas that I could write about in my assignment- little did I know that in the next 6months it would be an actual business that I would be running.

3 weeks later, I picked my business idea, I wrote my assignment! - and also was in the process to trade mark my new business, buy a domain to my new business and package my first order for my new business.

My Customize was born!

My Etsy shop (MyCustomizeUK )is still very small and still growing, but much effort and motivation was put into it in order for it to be launched and recognized, much hard work and reliance must be show into something in order for it to be successful so that’s what must be proceeded with.
I thank Mrs. Kelvie for being a very supportive headteacher and allowing me to have this opportunity to showcase my business and also to Mrs. McDowell (My business teacher) for giving me that very long assignment back in year 10 – otherwise I would not have been here.

Return to School - Term 2

Message from Miss Kelvie - Head Teacher

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    COVID 19 and Term 2

I really hope you are enjoying your half term and your children have managed to rest and recharge.

As infection rates continue to fluctuate nationally and across the county, I am emailing to set out clear expectations designed to continue to keep our school community safe.

We are all committed to the priority for Aylesford school to continue safely delivering face to face high quality education to all pupils.  I believe that the following measures will mean that we will be able to do this throughout term 2.

Expectations for our school community regarding Covid 19 are as follows:

Regular Testing using lateral flow tests

All staff and students must test twice a week (Wednesday’s and Saturday’s). All results must be recorded on the NHS website. If any student tests positive on a lateral flow test you must notify Miss Kelvie immediately by phone or email tanya.kelvie@aylesford.kent.sch.uk. Students who test positive on a lateral flow test must also book a PCR test. Only the person who has tested positive must isolate.

      Face Coverings

All staff and students will be expected to wear face coverings in communal areas.
Staff will model this behaviour around the school and encourage students to do the same. It is personal choice whether students wear face coverings during lessons.

        Handwashing and Sanitising

All staff and students must hand wash or sanitise at least once every hour.

All desks and surfaces to be wiped over with antibacterial wipes at the end of every lesson

          Rooms must be well ventilated
Windows and doors will be open where possible.

          One Way System

All students are to follow the one way system for entrance and exits to buildings. We will continue to use the fire exits in all buildings as the exits.
Meetings with parents and other stakeholders will take place on line as far as possible.
Events that have a direct impact on students learning will still take place (school trips and visiting speakers) but preferably events/meetings to take place online. All meetings will be by appointment only - key staff emails are on our website.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming our students back on Monday. Please ensure that you have explained the above expectations to your child and that they come to school on time, in full school uniform, ready to learn and hopefully smiling.

Thank you for your continued support.

            Miss Kelvie

Clerk to Governors Wins National Award

            10 September 2021

Clerk to Governors Wins National Award

We are delighted to say that Lesley Hardwick - the Aylesford Clerk to the Governing body was recognised as ‘Highly Commended’ at the recent Outstanding Governance Awards ceremony, hosted by the National Governors Asssociation

Lesley is recognised for outstanding practice and considerable expertise, in clerking both the maintained and academy sectors, as well as the positive impact she has had on those she mentors and supports. Her experience of conflict management, balancing relationships and personalities and her calming and professional demeanour all allow her to provide first-class support services. Her designed reports, templates and monitoring schedules – allowing governors to effectively triangulate information they are given – have been hugely successful and used as examples of outstanding practice across the county.

Judges were impressed by her dedication in supporting and mentoring governors, trustees and clerks in and outside of meetings. One example stood out. Taking the initiative to lead on a board self-evaluation, Lesley guided them in its completion, following up with skills analysis and training recommendations, all while mentoring the new chair to become more confident in leading the process the following year.

            Celebrating GCSE success and achievements

            12 August 2021

            Celebrating GCSE success and achievements

Aylesford School is delighted to be celebrating with students and to be able to report some outstanding achievements by our students in their GCSE and equivalent qualifications this summer. We are pleased that the grades for all subjects and students reflect, both the progress the school has made following a good Ofsted inspection in March 2020 and the hard work that students have put in.

This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards. The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic.

            Miss Kelvie, Headteacher:
“We are immensely proud of all the work and achievements of our students and the good character they have shown, especially after such a difficult and disrupted year. The students receiving results today are special to me as they are the first year group that I have taken all the way from Year 7 to Year 11 at Aylesford School as headteacher. It is not good bye as many are staying in our 6th form.  Our teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress onto our 6th form, further education and study, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.”

Congratulations to Year 13 on their results!

            Proud of our school results

Chatham Maritime Watersports Centre year 8 trip

Mrs Hawkes and Mr Blair had the pleasure of taking 8 year 8 students to the Chatham Maritime Watersports Centre.

Each student showed great character and respect to each other and the staff at the Watersports Centre.

They had great fun on the paddle boards and demonstrated great skills and a good bit of competition between them all, showing each other different moves and balance’s on the boards.

The boys loved the sailing even though they capsized a few times! This was a great fun day out and well deserved by each student and a they were a pleasure to take.

            14 July 2021

             Duke of Edinburgh 2021

Over the weekend our year 11 Duke of Edinburgh students were able to complete their practice expedition.

Students used their map reading skills to walk a route they had previously planned. After finishing their day’s walk on Friday students pitched their tents and cooked their own dinner.

We are extremely proud of the character they showed over the weekend and their excitement at getting back into the wilderness.

Year 11 students virtual work experience with Salesforce

            12 July 2021

Year 11 students virtual work experience with Salesforce

9 of our Year 11 students recently took part in a week long virtual work experience with Salesforce.

They were taught cutting edge business principles by Salesforce employees from all over the world and were helped throughout the week to create presentations.

The student’s presentations were about how Salesforce employees can contribute towards sustainability in the environment and at the end of the week they presented live to a number of Salesforce employees. They did a superb job throughout the entire week and we’re extremely proud of them.

They showed excellent self-discipline and curiosity to get as much from this opportunity as they possibly could. A huge well done to the students involved!

Aylesford School Ofsted ‘Good’ in every single area - April 2020

            1 June 2021

Aylesford School Ofsted ‘Good’ in every single area - April 2020

Aylesford School has been ruled “Good” by Ofsted in every single area after a two day inspection on the 3rd and 4th of March 2020. We are delighted to share the inspectors report with you.

It gives me great pleasure to be able to share our Ofsted Inspection Report which confirms that Aylesford School is a ‘Good’ school in all categories.

When I started at Aylesford School in January 2017 as Interim Headteacher the Local Authority had already carried out a review that said that the school was inadequate in all areas. Then in November 2017 Ofsted declared Aylesford a school that required improvement but with Good Leadership, Management and 6th Form. But I could see the potential Aylesford had, and in Partnership with Wrotham School, worked hard to set the school on its journey to becoming outstanding

Since then we have worked tirelessly to improve all areas of the school and have used our drive to develop Character Education and improvement results academic qualifications to enable us to provide better opportunities and quality of education.

We are now the school of choice in the local area and are oversubscribed. We were one of the first schools, nationally to have achieved the Kitemark for Character Education and our exam results are improving significantly year on year with the majority of subjects, including English and Maths, in line with National expectations. Our Ofsted report confirms all the good work and is a tribute to all concerned with Aylesford School.

Thank you to all stakeholders-staff, students, parents, governors and members of our wider school community for your hard work and contributions.

We are now going to strive to be outstanding.
            Tanya Kelvie

            All Parents, Carers and Students

We are looking forward to welcoming all students back in September.

I hope you know that our top priority is to keep all students and staff as safe as we can. To do this we need all stakeholders to be on board and supportive. The guidance from government is ever changing making it difficult to give clear communication.

Late yesterday the government released updated guidance for schools which I encourage you to read. This is the link to the government guidance released yesterday (Friday 28th August):

            https://forms.gle/1casxsYETCVoHvhA9

Students and parents will still need to engage with home learning- guidance will be given.

            Normal school rules apply.

Students must be in full school uniform.

Students must follow the Ready, Respect and Safe rules.

We expect students to show good character and work with us to ensure all students are able to learn and stay safe and healthy.

I know there is a lot to take in and that even with all the measures that have been put in place there will be anxiety concerning children returning to school.

We are very grateful for your continued support.

            Miss Kelvie”>https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools

I am pleased that Aylesford opening in September is in line with government guidance. Details of how we are following the guidance are in our ‘September Arrangements’ letter which is on our website. Again, please read this letter and go through it with your child to ensure we keep everyone as safe as possible.

Please be aware of the following and go through with your child/children:

ALL students are expected to return to school in September as per government guidance (please see the link to guidance above)

            Year 7 - Wednesday 2nd September.
Year 7 should go straight to reception.

            Year 12 - Wednesday 2nd September
Year 12 should go straight to 6th form centre

            Year 13 - Thursday 3rd September
Year 13 should go straight to the 6th Form Centre

            Year 11 - Thursday 3rd September
Year 11 should go straight to where they line up during a fire drill/evacuation.

            Year 10 - Friday 4th September
Year 10 should go straight to the Muga

            Year 9 - Monday 7th September
Year 9 should go straight to the Muga

            Year 8 - Tuesday 8th September
Year 8 should go straight to where they line up during a fire drill/evacuation

Staff will be on hand to direct.

Where possible students should walk, cycle or be dropped off and picked up by car. KCC have confirmed that where possible public transport will run but that it may be a limited service due to social distancing. Students are expected to wear face coverings on all public transport. The school has no jurisdiction over the busses. Parents should contact the bus company if they have concerns.

No visitors can enter school buildings/ site without prior arrangement. Parents should maintain contact with the school via email or telephone. Contact details can be found on our website. In the first instance contact should be made with your child’s mentor or Progress Leader.

All year groups have a different start and finish time which must be adhered to. No member of staff or student will be able to access the school site before 8:00. All students and staff have to be off site at their allocated time at the end of the day. This is so deep cleaning can take place and to ensure health and safety.

All students will be expected to hand wash or sanitise regularly throughout the day.

All students unless they are medically exempt (see government guidance) will be expected to wear face masks/coverings in communal areas. Students who are exempt will need a note from parents explaining why.

All students are in Year group bubbles and have a base area. Students are not allowed to leave their bubble base area without permission. Students who are given permission will have to sign out of their bubble area and back in (this is to enable effective use of track and trace should we need to and for safeguarding).

Students will remain in their bubble base during break time. Please ensure your child has snacks and bottled water with them as they will not be able to buy food and drink on site.

Year group bubbles have a designated place to go at lunch time and will be escorted by a member of staff. In the event of bad weather students will have lunch in their bubble base area.

Where possible students should bring a packed lunch. The canteen will provide lunch for those who have pre ordered and paid in advance. Those in receipt of free school meals just need to pre-order.
The link for all students who want to order lunch is as follows:

              CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Monday 27/4/20 4.00pm

              Dear Parents/Carers

We are continually overwhelmed with the support that is being given to students by parents/carers and with how well the majority of students are accessing the work and engaging with the lessons. As we are now seeing more and more lessons now being delivered ‘live’ through zoom, we wanted to publish a code of conduct to ensure that all students are accessing this in the appropriate way and to maximise the learning opportunities that this presents.

Please can we ask you to share this with your child/children to ensure that they understand their responsibilities in their lessons

In order to ensure an appropriate learning environment, please ensure that the following code of conduct is adhered too:

Use your real name so a register can be taken of students in attendance/no changing of user names during sessions

Use appropriate language throughout the session

Do not share personal information with others

Keep your webcam turned off for the meeting

Mute you microphone when you aren’t asking or answering a question. This will prevent background noise and feedback from disrupting the session

Do not share the meeting invitation code and password with people outside of your class

If students fail to follow the school’s policies during a Zoom lesson, they they will be removed from the session.

              Kind Regards

              Aylesford School

                CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Thursday 6/4/20 4.00pm

Message for Year 10 Parents, Carers and Year 10 students

Dear Parents, Carers and Year 10 students

Miss Kelvie and I would like to thank all of Year 10 for the fantastic work ethic so many of you have shown since the school closed. There have been some really positive virtual lessons as well as a large number of constructive conversations between staff and students. I would really like to also thank all of the parents for their ongoing support in this difficult time, it is much appreciated.

This is a hugely important time for Year 10 and so that they don’t lose momentum I’d like to give them a bit of an extra incentive to motivate them further.

On Friday 1st May I will be asking all Year 10 teachers to rate each of their students 1 to 4 based on the work they give teachers from now until then. This will be based on not only the work produced in the next 2 weeks but also their effort and attitude to learning shown. The top 5 students with the best average score will win a prize.

There will also be another prize given to students who have done particularly well so far and we will be asking teachers for additional nominations in each subject.

I hope you’re keeping safe and well, any questions or queries please email me Philip.neeve@aylesford.kent.sch.uk.”

                  Kind regards

During this period of uncertainty it is likely that we all be spending more time online. This includes us and our children.

SaferInternet.org have produced a guide to ensuring that we are all keeping safe online during this time - We would encourage all parents/carers and students to read this in coming days.

                  CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Friday 3/4/20 1.00pm

                  Exam update from Ofqual

Ofqual - Guidance for Teacher,Students and Parents

                  Ofqual - Letter to Students

Dear Parents and Carers and Year 11 and Year 13 Students,

I hope that you are all safe and well and are looking forward to your Easter break.

Many of you have been anxious about how your grades and qualifications will be awarded and have been working hard to get work completed.

I am pleased to be able to give you the latest information and hope that this will alleviate some pressure and stress.

Above is a letter from OFQUAL to students explaining how grades will be awarded. I have also attached a document called ‘Guidance for teachers, students, parents and carers: Summer 2020 grades for GCSE, AS and A level. Extended Project Qualification and Advanced Extension Award in Maths’. Please read these two documents carefully.

Your teachers and myself will be submitting grades for each of you and for all of your subjects and we have to take into consideration a range of things like your classwork and homework; your results in assignments and any mock exams; any non-exam assessment or coursework you might have done; and your general progress during your course.

It is really important that you keep all of your work, PPE’s, Mock Papers, Class books and any other evidence you have of your work in a safe place - we are likely to need this later on and we will contact you when this is needed.

You will see from the guidance and letter that you are not required to do any new work or tasks - if we need anything from you we will contact you. Of course you are able to continue to complete your work if you think it will add to the evidence your teachers have in awarding you the best possible grade.

It has been a real pleasure to work with you all and I could not be prouder of the young people that you have become.

Thank you for your continued support - we will of course be in contact with you after Easter!

                  Please stay healthy and safe,

                  Kind Regards

                  Miss Kelvie

                  CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Wednesday 1/4/20 10.00am

English Department Update - To the Parents and Carers of Students in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10

                  Dear Parents/Carers

We would like to make parents aware of some changes to the English remote learning.

The English department would like to start by saying thank you for all the work we have been receiving - we have been impressed by the amount and quality of work being returned and have tried to congratulate students by email or phone.

You will notice that on Tuesdays and Thursdays we have now assigned reading instead of classwork - we feel that three days a week of classwork and 2 days of reading will allow a better balance, help students who are feeling overwhelmed and also allow students to benefit from reading which is so important.

Over the 2 week Easter break we will not be setting any English classwork however we know that some students might choose to complete an optional research project. We would prefer for students to do this by hand and keep it for submission when we return to school - we will celebrate the work completed by creating a new display board in the English corridor.

                  1. Research an environmental issue (deforestation, global warming, plastic pollution) and create a factsheet or leaflet using language to persuade people to do something about it

                  2. Research an equality issue in society such as gender equality or racism and write a speech giving your opinions on the issue—this can be submitted as a document or video!

                  3. Write a book review about a book you have read in March—include your likes and dislikes and comments on characters, setting and plot. Design a new front cover for the book.

                  4. Research life during world war 1 or 2—for a soldier or someone at home during the blitz. Write 3 diary entries showing their experiences and thoughts.

Please contact any of the English teachers if you need any support, advice or work -we are all happy to help,

                  Kind Regards

                  Mrs Johnston

                  CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Tuesday 31/03/20 10.00am

                  Letter to all Year 10/11/12/13

Aylesford School Update from Miss Kelvie - Headteacher and Mr Wright Executive Headteacher

                    Dear Parents and Carers

OFSTED SUCCESS AND OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS

You will remember that our school was inspected by Ofsted at the beginning of this month. Ofsted have paused the publication of all inspection reports during the coronavirus crisis.  However, we are delighted to tell you that Aylesford School was judged to be ‘good’ in every area. We look forward to sharing the report with you once it has been published.

We are aware that everyone will be feeling anxious and stressed at this very challenging time and want to reassure you that the staff are fully committed to supporting families.  We write this communication in hope that it will help to alleviate some of the pressure you are under.

The absolute priority is to stay safe and healthy - nothing else is as important! Please follow government guidance and stay at home as much as possible - this also applies to our young people.

There are lots of students that are showing up as not having logged into Show My Homework at all. This could be because they have logged in manually or used their parents log in or used a tablet which doesn’t require you to log in each time. It is a real concern that there are over 40 students in Year 11 and 10 who don’t appear to have logged in at all and it is really important that Year 13, 12, 11 and 10 keep up with their studies .

We still do not know how grades are going to be awarded to Year 13 and Year 11 students. The rumour is that we will need to submit Predicted Grades and Highest Mock/PPE Exam paper grades (These could be second attempt papers after level up), they are then likely to ask us to send a sample off which is why we need to ensure we have good examples of work - even if they do not ask us for sample work, this will be needed if we have to appeal any grades we are not happy with.

When Year 11 and Year 13 have completed work they should submit it to their teacher for marking. If it is not possible to send to their teacher they must keep hold of all work and books - we will contact them when we need it.

Our staff have been asked to try and provide an education remotely - this is new to us all and much of it is trial and error. Teachers have set work on Show My Homework and we ask all students to attempt what is being set. Our staff will mark work in line with our assessment policy. This means that not every piece of work will be marked and this is the case when students are in school too. They will keep in touch with you via email during the school day.

We know that parents and students are trying their best at present, and that parents are trying to juggle staying safe, working from home, keeping children occupied and entertained as well as trying to home educate - you can’t do it all, you can only try your best. Parents who are struggling to get children to work at home or who are experiencing issues in accessing the work, printing the work, submitting the work, please do not let is cause you lots of stress - there are more important things to worry about - all we ask is that you communicate any issues with us so that we can support you!

If you have an issue accessing Show My Homework (SMHW) check the guidance we have posted on the website and on facebook in the first instance. If you are still having issues accessing SMHW please contact your child’s mentor - they will be making contact with you if they haven’t already. If after trying those things you still have trouble please contact Mrs Land:

                    niamh.land@aylesford.kent.sch.uk.

If you have an issue with a particular subject please contact the Head of Department or teacher of the subject. Staff contact details and email addresses can be found on our school website.

Please remember education comes in many forms including the promotion of life skills, development of good character and the art of communication - all are crucial at this time. Do not be afraid to allow your child to spend some time away from Show My Homework doing other activities such as cooking, cleaning, arts and crafts, writing letters to family and friends who they are unable to see, doing some fitness and even a bit of social time using zoom or house party or facetime if you have it.

Other information you might find useful:

                    Free School Meals
We have ordered vouchers for those students who are in receipt of Free School Meals but they are yet to arrive - we are working to resolve this and as soon as we receive them they will be sent out to families.

                    Access to ICT
Those parents who have emailed in directly to indicate that their child has no access to ICT have all received the following reply from me:

                    Thank you for your email!
I am trying to resolve ICT access issues but like everything at the moment this is proving difficult as shops are not open, deliveries aren’t taking place in many cases and many of my staff have to self isolate.
We will be working in this order of priority over the coming weeks to address issues that have been emailed to me regarding non or limited access:
Year 11 and 13 students who must get sample and completed coursework to us.
Students with no access- not even a phone to work from. We will work from Year 12 to Year 7
                    Students with limited shared access.

We just don’t know if and when we will be able to help Year 10 down to Year 7. When Year 13 and 11 have finished their work we will reallocate laptops and we have ordered some more so hope to be able to help Year 10 as the next priority.

Paper packs are being sent to all Year 7, 8,9 and 10 students who do not have or have limited access to ICT today.

Most of the work can be accessed using a smart phone.

School Trips and Events that Parents have paid for:
All school trips and events have been cancelled until we re-open (we really do not know when this will be).
Parents will receive a full refund but we have limited availability of staff and so we ask parents to be patient with us.

Please stay healthy and keep safe.

                    Kind Regards

Miss T Kelvie and Mr M Wright

Our staff have been asked to try and provide an education remotely - this is new to us all and much of it is trial and error. Teachers have set work on Show My Homework and we ask all students to attempt what is being set. Our staff will mark work in line with our assessment policy. This means that not every pice of work will be marked and this is the case when students are in school too.

Dear Year 13 IB Students Only- Message from Mrs Dighton

I just wanted to send you a gentle reminder about the urgency of getting your Reflective Project and your RPPF form sent over to me this week. Thank you to those of you who have already sent me your first drafts, however there are still a few students who haven’t sent me anything. The final deadline for submission is this Friday (3rd April), this means that your work will be sent to the IB exam board and after Friday your work cannot be changed. It is really important that you get this work to me and that it is your best work because this is likely to be used to give you an overall grade, as well as your other IB coursework. As you will know by now the IB exams have been cancelled so your coursework will be used (amongst other assessments) to give you the final grade that you deserve. Please be aware that any IB student who does not send me any work by Tuesday or Wednesday of this week, I will be contacting your parents as a matter of priority. Please do not hesitate to contact me on amie.dighton@aylesford.kent.sch.uk if you have need too.

We have been working hard on this project for months now and I am excited to read all of your chosen subjects over the next few days.

                      CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Tuesday 24/03/20 12.30pm

Message for all Year 13 and Year 13 Parents

Dear Parents and Students of Year 13,

As you may be aware, the Government have confirmed that the GCSE resit exams in English and Maths are cancelled, as are all BTEC and CTEC examinations, and we have also had confirmation that the IB exams are also now cancelled. Students will be awarded their grades based on predictions, mock exams, prior attainment and also the coursework you have produced for your subjects. Other evidence could also be used, but we are still awaiting confirmation on this. Please read the email below carefully to ensure you have the best chance at receiving the grades you deserve.

As well as the evidence mentioned above, your coursework for each of your subjects is now critical in ensuring you are awarded a true and fair grade. The Sampling process that normally occurs every year where we send off student work to be quality assured has now been ‘paused’ by BTEC until further notice, and as of yet it has not been confirmed how this will take place (The exam board has obviously realised that it is going to be difficult to collate everything when we are all working from home). It is therefore vital that all Year 13 students are spending their time at home this week completing assessments and coursework to the best of their ability. Where possible this should be completed to your Target grade. Although it is unclear how coursework will be used, it will definitely be used in some capacity to grade work and justify exam results, so I strongly urge that all students take this opportunity to complete the work set.

Each of your teachers will be setting work remotely via either Show My Homework, email or if they are brave like Mr Elcome, you may be lucky enough to be invited to an online lesson with your teacher. Please log in to these portals every day so that you do not miss anything and please adhere to any deadlines which your teachers are setting you. Failure to do so may result in staff contacting home or even worse, you may not get the grade you deserve. You may also want to check your spam folder on emails in case some emails are filtered here instead of your inbox.

This is not the way I wanted your final year at Aylesford School Sixth Form to end, but as a school community we can all work together remotely to ensure that whatever your plan is after Aylesford that you get there successfully. Please contact me should you have any problems or queries.

                      #staysafe #stayhome

                      Mrs Dighton
                      Director of Sixth Form

                      CORONAVIRUS UPDATE - Monday 23/03/20 11.45am

Message from Mr Matthews - Year 11 Progress Leader

                      Dear parents and students,

As you may be aware, the government have confirmed that the GCSE exams are cancelled but that students will be awarded GCSE grades based on predictions, mock exams, prior attainment and other evidence yet to be confirmed. Please read the email below carefully to ensure you have the best chance at receiving the grades you deserve.

As a school we may be asked to submit work to be moderated to back up students results. We are therefore requesting year 11 students to spend their time this week completing assessments to the best of their ability. These will be used alongside their mock exams to justify the results and therefore we strongly urge that students take this opportunity to complete the work set.

Each of your teachers, or Heads of Department, will be setting you appropriate tasks to complete on Show My Homework. This needs to be checked regularly and deadlines need to be adhered to in order to give students the best chance possible of achieving the grades they deserve.

It is also important that you check your emails regularly (please check your spam folder also as sometimes emails will be filtered there by your provider). Some subjects have sent out invites to online learning platforms to make conversing with students and submitting work easier. Instructions will be in these emails where it concerns your child.

Since it is being completed at home we do not expect students to complete it in exam conditions - they may use books, revision guides or the internet - but we cannot accept work that is clearly not the students own work or work that takes substantially longer to compete than would normally be allowed, as this is not a true reflection of their ability - each of the assessments set should have a recommended time stipulated by the class teacher. Teachers will return work that they do not feel is reasonable to accept as a students own and clarify its validity or ask that it is repeated in exam conditions.

The government hopes to get students grades to them in July - if you are not happy with the result you received you can contact the school who can try to appeal if we agree with your concerns or you will have the opportunity to take the exams ‘at the soonest possible opportunity’ - probably in the autumn term.

I encourage students to submit work daily as tasks are completed. Yo will be contacted if your child does not complete work or it is not to the standard they are capable of; support in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Please contact myself or class teachers with any queries.

                      Kind regards,

                      Daniel Matthews

                      CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 23/03/20

                      Dear Parents/Carers

Please see below the guidance from the Education Secretary,Gavin Williamson

He states “You should only send your child to school on Monday if you have to, because your work is critical to our COVID-19 response. If you are able to keep your child at home you should”

                      CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 22/03/20

                      Dear Parents/Carers

                      EXAM UPDATE -YEAR 11/13

We now have an update on how grades will be awarded following the cancellation of the exams.

The full details of this announcement can be found here:

                      https://www.gov.uk/government/news/further-details-on-exams-and-grades-announced?fbclid=IwAR2Si7L5hPUM5RibCj2sXx17jJvamRQnhga6sZj6plRJjhmEonAn89FTco8

                      In summary…

                      -      As we knew this year’s exams are cancelled and will not be sat this summer.
                      -      Universities have promised they will flexible and support students to access their courses.
                      -      All students will be given a grade to reflect the work they have put in.
                      -      Ofqual will work with teachers to generate a grade that reflects this hard work by asking teachers to submit a grade which reflects the individuals work.
                      -      The teacher submitted grade will be evidenced by mock exams results, coursework and will be combined with prior attainment grades to produce a final grade that is fair.
                      -      School will be given full guidance on how to do this at a later date and it will be robustly monitored.
                      -      The aim is to provide these grades to students by the end of July.
                      -      These grades will follow the same distribution as previous years so will not stand out from previous years grades and will be awarded proportionately.
                      -        If students do not believe the correct process has been followed in their case they will be able to appeal on that basis.
                      -      In addition, if they do not feel their calculated grade reflects their performance, they will have the opportunity to sit an exam at the earliest reasonable opportunity, once schools are open again.
                      -      The Government will not publish any school or college level educational performance data based on tests, assessments or exams for 2020.

As this is all of the information any of us have at the moment I will not be able to answer any questions as I do not have any more details than you. We will keep parents and students up to date as this moves forward.

This does mean that students do not have to prepare further for exams or assessments. However, we may call individual or groups of students for coursework/ evidence that may currently be at home. We will be in contact.

                      Kind regards

                      Miss Kelvie - Headteacher

                      CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 19/03/20

                      Dear Parents and Carers

There have been significant announcements this evening from the government.

As you will understand, these will have a huge impact on our work as a school and as you as families.

It is clear that from Monday the school will be shut, as will all schools until further notice.

We will be planning to meet the expectations placed on schools in the speech and we will be contacting you over the next couple of days regarding how we will provide for the children of key workers and the other key groups mentioned. More information will follow in the next few days once we have clearer details of what this might look like and who it will apply to.

Boris Johnson has also said that all exams in May and June will be cancelled. At the current time we have no further information on this announcement but we believe that exam boards may look at samples of work. We will therefore use the next two days with Year 11 and Year 13 in school to get the best samples of their work together. Students undertaking Food, Art and ICT practicals will still be allowed to do these as an example of their best work. Certainly, their best work will be used to appeal any grades that are awarded that we believe to be unfair.

Again, as soon as we know what these changes mean and what will be put in place as an alternative, we will let you know.

I will be in contact again over the next couple of days with more information.

Thank you for your continued support.

                        Kind regards

                        Miss T Kelvie

In order for students to return safely we will need to have mass testing in place. The government want us to test students twice (3 days apart) before they return. (Details to follow). We need at least 11 volunteers!

Due to the large number of people required to undertake training and delivery of mass testing in schools we are asking for volunteers from our school community and will be asking anyone who is willing and able to help us do this to contact us in the first week back to discuss further. It is already clear that we will not be able to do this without this support as teaching staff will be teaching fully from day one, we simply won’t have capacity without voluntary help. If you are able to help with this or know anyone who can please email me: Tanya.kelvie@aylesford.kent.sch.uk

Thank you to those of you who have volunteered so far – I will be in contact with you soon.

                          Character Recognition

                          5 August 2020

                          Character Recognition

As some of you may know, Aylesford School works extremely closely with the University of Birmingham’s Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues. We have a strong professional relationship with the Centre who are at the global forefront of Character Education, this allows us to learn from the very best minds across the country and helps us ensure we can deliver a high quality provision back in school.

The other great thing about working with the Jubilee Centre is the opportunity to share what we do with other schools and other professionals. Just before the summer break Mr Wright got to present at a Webinar about the exciting journey the school has been on so far, taking questions from other school leaders both nationally and internationally. This was a fantastic opportunity not only to share, but to raise the profile of the school in a wider context.

We’re also delighted to post a link below to a document released recently by the Jubilee Centre - Windows into Schools. This documents aims to showcase the very best of Character Education in schools and Aylesford School is extremely proud to be included and recognised in this publication.

Year 7 RE Trip -Canterbury Cathedral

                            6 March 2020

Year 7 RE Trip -Canterbury Cathedral

On the 4th of March, Mrs Baker  accompanied by three amazing members of staff, took 51 year 7 students to Canterbury Cathedral. The trip was a joint History and RE trip looking at the significance of the Cathedral for historians and pilgrims alike. We had a fully guided tour, with some students even going up the pilgrims steps on their knees!

The staff at the Cathedral and the staff on the trip were impressed with the politeness, curiosity and resilience of all students; it was quite cold even with our coats on! The Cathedral staff even took time to write the us at the school after the visit!

“We had the pleasure of your year 7 pupils visiting is this week. I do hope that they enjoyed their visit as much as all the guides who took them on their tours certainly did,  they told us how good they were, very polite and attentive, with great questioning.  They all said how much they enjoyed interacting with them”

Thank you to everyone who assisted with this trip!

                            Mrs Baker

English Department - Christmas Carol Revision

                                    29 January 2020

English Department - Christmas Carol Revision

At GCSE all students study A Christmas Carol which will form a large part of their AQA literature exam.

It is important that students own a copy of the text which they can use in class and at home to study from.

There are a wealth of resources available to support students with their revision, some of our favourite websites are:

                                    Seneca revision
                                    BBC bitesize
                                    Sparknotes
                                    Revision world

As well as these websites we have created our own revision booklet with much of the key information and quotes students need to learn. They should begin learning this information as early as possible to ensure they are confident for their final exams.

The revision guide should be downloaded using this link:

                                    Christmas Carol - Revision Booklet

To see an example of the questions students will be asked please click this link - students are encouraged to complete exam practice at home, each essay is worth 30 marks and a response will be around 2-3 pages long:

                                                    20 December 2019

Aylesford School host first Dementia Cafe
                                                      Aylesford Host Dementia Cafe

The Dementia Café is the work of Mr Neeve and our A Team which is Aylesford Schools’ Student Council. The council are always looking for ways to be more community focused as a school. Our Dementia Café was inspired by the work of Paul Murray at the Oasis Academy, Isle of Sheppey who kindly allowed us to visit one of their very successful café’s in the summer.

We would also like to thank, Laura Summers from Building a Dementia Friendly Maidstone and Bekka Fuszard the Chair of Kent County Council Dementia Friendly Communities Team and the National Lottery Community Fund for supporting us with the project so far. It would certainly not have been possible without their input and we are now planning to have this as a regular feature of the school calendar with our next Dementia Friendly Community Café  on Thursday 26th March and another in July.
The day was a tremendous success with all guests living and supporting those with Dementia extremely pleased to have been invited and all enjoyed the range of activities that we had on offer.

We were honoured to have two guests of honour with both Mayor Jill Anderson and Councillor Peter Homewood thoroughly entertained by students Aimee and Ashton dancing to Elvis’ Jail House Rock, a Christmas monologue read by Isobel and Amy, carol singing from our Year 7 choir and our Year 9 guitar ensemble ably led by Freya and Jack. All guests were well looked after by the A Team and Mr Kenmure’s catering students who showed tremendous character in welcoming our guests, keeping their teas and coffees topped up and giving them a continuous supply of cakes and scones throughout the afternoon.

We were also grateful to have a number of stalls for guests to enjoy. Thanks must go to Cobtree Young Farmers and Kent Life who volunteered to bring animals from Kent Life such as Gerbils, Chickens, Ferrets, Rabbits and a Tortoise. Their generosity was well received and this proved extremely popular with all those at the café both young and old. This was especially the case for our guests from Amherst Court and Ashley Gardens Care homes. We were particularly pleased to have our Art Competition for years 7 8 and 9 judged by David, an artist and Ashley Gardens Resident. Congratulations to George and Alicia (Year 7) and Tiffany (year 8) who won prizes such as Gravity Vouchers, Bowling Vouchers and Sweets and Books which were generously arranged by Ann Franks from The Garden of England Homecare.
Thanks must finally go to other stall holders at the event for their support: Stuart from Sing for your Life, Jaime Jukes from Care UK who’s new care home will be opening in April, Grahame Hardy from the Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust, Jan Jensen from the Alzheimer’s Society Time for Dementia Project.

                                                    Miss Kelvie- Headteacher

“We are proud and honoured to host and organise a Dementia Cafe at Aylesford School. It is no surprise given that the numbers being diagnosed with Dementia is on the increase, that this is a cause close to my heart, having supported a close family member with Dementia.

As well as achieving good academic qualifications, we also aim to develop good character in our students. Our students understand the importance of being an inclusive community and are keen to support people and raise awareness of Dementia. We look forward to welcoming many more to our next Dementia Cafe event”

Grahame Hardy – Specialist Nurse for Dementia Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust

“a fantastic event, happy to help for the next one in 2020 – thank you to Mr Neeve and all the staff and students involved Congratulations on such a wonderful event

The model of the Dementia Cafés incorporates support, knowledge and an understanding for people living with Dementia or memory loss. They can make a huge difference to the person which also increases their well-being, emotions and feelings which would remain with them. Recent research from the Alzheimer’s Society states that 99% of people who go along to Dementia Cafés say that it has provided them with useful information. The Dementia Café event at Aylesford School was a fantastic event, using local Community Resources and also the students and pupils who were so confident and engaging with the people living with Dementia was so lovely to see. Thank you to Mr Neeve and all the staff and students involved and Congratulations on such a wonderful event”.

                                                        Year 7 - French Trip

Year 7 had a fantastic day in Lille yesterday!! (17th December 2019)

They all showed great character throughout the day developing their curiosity and open-mindedness as they delved into part of French culture!! The students visited the Lille Christmas Market and many took a ride on the festive big wheel!

After the market students also enjoyed the Planetarium in the Science Museum where they got to observe the sky, stars and the moon as well as find out more about our universe.

Students were a credit to the school - passport control even took time to tell us that our students were the politest students they had ever met!!! Well done all Year 7 and for the staff who attended!

A special mention must also go to Mrs Lawton for taking the time to organise such a fantastic day!

                                                          Aylesford School Election Results

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning about the election process, finding out about the main parties and the different policies, including how they may effect us in the coming years.

Towards the end of last week our students had the opportunity to vote for the party of their choice. This was a great opportunity for students to learn about the Democracy process and also develop their curiosity and open-mindedness.

Well done to all students and a big thank you to Mr Doggett for organising.

                                                              Aylesford School General Election

                                                              Aylesford School General Election

Over the last couple of weeks students have been finding out more the upcoming general election. We have been learning about how a democratic voting system works and why it is important. We have also had the opportunity to find out more about the main political parties as well as exploring more about their key policies.

This week we are holding our very own general election and by Friday will know the results once all year groups have had the opportunity to cast their vote!

Students have shown great open-mindedness to consider a range of view points and perspectives about the general election

From Curiosity when most of them tried snails! Resilience each day whilst walking absolutely everywhere, Courage when going at the highest point of Paris on the Tour Montparnasse ( higher than Eiffel Tower!) and Confidence when speaking French!

                                                                Aylesford School students make memories

We could not have hoped for a more fun, alert, curious bunch of students to take away with us to Paris!

What a amazing time with great memories made by all!!

                                                                Aylesford Shoe Box Appeal

Aylesford Give to Royal British Legion

This Christmas the staff and students at Aylesford school have provided 35 christmas boxes to give to the veterans young children and grandchildren at the RBL. This was an idea put forward by a group of students and Miss Jarivs as a way of demonstrating compassion to our local communuty.

In addition to this We have also raised a total £95.35 through donations that will be going to a local homeless charity for Christmas. This has been such a fantastic way for the students to show compassion and kindness over the festive season.

This is another wonderful example of how our school community pulls together to help others! Well done to Miss Jarvis and all students that were involved!

                                                                Happy Christmas Everyone!

The students had a fantastic time and were very engaged throughout and showed great curiosity to find out more about his profession and story
They particularly enjoyed the new acting game that he introduced to them!!

Another great opportunity for Aylesford School!

                                                                18 November 2019

                                                                Aylesford welcomes the Dementia Tour

                                                                Aylesford school’s Dementia Tour

As part of the schoools ongoing community projects around Dementia the School were lucky enough to have the Virtual Dementia Tour Bus in school on Friday courtesy of Kent County Council and Training2Care.

28 students and 12 staff were able to experience a virtual simulation of Dementia followed by a debrief from an experienced trainer in dementia care.

Students got the opportunity to virtually experience what it is like to live with Dementia. This is the only medically and scientifically proven method of giving a person with a healthy brain the experience of what dementia might be like. Invented 23 years ago in America by leading professor PK Beville, CEO Second Wind Dreams, the VDT has been experienced by over 3 million people in 23 countries. This training is about empowerment for all including staff, relatives or anyone that comes into direct or indirect contact with people with dementia. The core principal and the heart of the organisation is to ensure that people remember that they are responsible for the person and not the disease, and to help those being trained to recognise that they have a responsibility to focus on the person and not what is convenient to them.

This was perfect preparation for students taking part in the dementia cafe and gave them a number of ways to ensure that those at the dementia cafe feel safe, comfortable and well looked after when they visit on the 19th December.

The experience was so moving that one student said that ‘everybody should have access to this experience,’ whilst a member of staff said that, despite years working in care homes and being trained in working with dementia, “this was by far the best training she had ever been part of”.

All were very glad when the headphones with amplified noise and tunnel vision glasses were taken off. Students and staff showed tremendous courage to take part as the experience left them feeling disoriented and powerless to do even the most mundane tasks and it gave students far more compassion and respect for all those who are unable to take the headphones off and live with dementia every day of their lives.

Thanks must go to all the members of staff who supported this event, all the students and staff for taking part so willingly and to Mr Neeve for organising.

                                                                  Inter Faith Day

                                                                  15 November 2019

                                                                  Inter Faith Day

                                                                  Inter-Faith Day

This week we had the fantastic opportunity to host an Inter-Faith Day as part of Inter-Faith Week which is happening next week. A group of Year 8, 9 and 10 students were able to hear from and ask questions to representatives of 6 different faiths.

Our students asked extremely insightful questions, showing their ability to reflect deeply on what they were discovering. They were respectful and showed a real open-mindedness to engage with views of others. The day was also observed and filmed by London South Bank University as part of a national case study!

Well done to Mrs Baker and all of the students who took part!

                                                                  Trip to Belgium

                                                                  12 November 2019

                                                                  Trip to Belgium

Aylesford Remember - History Trip to Ypres

Yesterday 73 Year 8 and 9 students and staff members travelled to the battlefields of Ypres, Belgium as part of their History curriculum and with also reference to their English curriculum.

The weather was ever changing and the students had to do a lot more walking than expected due to the Remembrance day celebrations across Ypres. Considering the trip was focused on spending the majority of the time outside, the students showed amazing resilience, compassion, motivation and self-discipline.

The visit began with a tour of the Passchendaele Museum, looking at the 5 Battles of Ypres and the Battle of Passchendaele. From trying out the weight of the army kit soldiers wore, to experiencing what life was like in a WW1 underground Dug Out, the students really got a feel of what like was like for a solider during WW1. From this venue we travelled to Tyne Cot Commonwealth Military Cemetery to provide students with a clearer understanding of the huge scale of lives that were lost during the fighting of WW1. There was time for students to reflect on the events of WW1 and also reflect on warfare today. Students then travelled to Sanctuary Wood museum to experience a WW1 trench network system that a farmer had found in his field. Students were able to walk around the site and through the trenches to understand further what life would have been like on the front line.

After this, students were then taken to Ypres to visit a Belgium chocolate shop and they especially enjoyed the free samples! We were also lucky enough to walk up to the Menin Gate to show the students the memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives in WW1.

The students were a credit to the school! There were several compliments across the day at how well-mannered and respectful the students were. A big thank you to all those that took part in the day to make it a successful and fantastic experience for all involved.

                                                                  Kind regards

                                                                  The History Department

                                                                  Christmas Shoe Box Appeal 2019

                                                                  11 November 2019

                                                                  Christmas Shoe Box Appeal 2019

So it is coming up to Christmas, and our wonderful students at Aylesford School are going to be working together in their mentor groups to make a Christmas Box for those who are less fortunate.

The Christmas box needs to be completed by Friday the 22nd of November 2019 and students can bring anything that they think the child would like in their box. Mentors will be going through with the students what they can and cannot include in the box this week

Students will also need to bring in a small donation with them to include with the box as each mentor needs to raise £5 per box.

Thank you in advanced for your support it is such a lovely way to make a child’s day extra special this Christmas and a fantastic way for the students to show compassion this festive season.

The Queen comes to Aylesford School!

What a fantastic day for Aylesford School! We had an incredibly successful trip to the Royal British Legion today to and we were all fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the Queen arrive and leave for her Royal Visit at the British Legion, with some students and staff even lucky enough to have a conversation with her!

Not only that - but a few weeks ago Aylesford was chosen as the location for her Majesty to land in her helicopter! This has been kept under-wraps until today and has been the reason for the extremely high police and security presence around the school this week!!!

We were lucky enough to see her arrive back at Aylesford today and take off from our field in the Royal Helicopter! All our students got to come out and wave their flags to say farewell to our Majesty the Queen for what was a truly memorable experience that will stay with our students for a lifetime!

A big thank you must go to Mr D Wright and Miss Kelvie for organising the day and the opportunities for the students, another huge thank you to our staff for supporting, and a massive well done to all our students who showed great character and were incredible ambassadors for Aylesford School throughout the day!

We have also seen record numbers attend netball club and have performed well in the recent tournament. Where we beat Cornwallis, Drew to SSS and lost to Invicta narrowly.

We have seen record numbers of girls attending football club and trials, with the tournaments beginning next month

The dance company/academy has been well attended and is great to see this back in the curriculum and the students are engaging in the club and in lessons.

We were successful in a bid for handball for a grant of £2000. This club has been really popular and reached out to additional students that we don’t always see at clubs.

It is also exciting to see the trips being added to the department this year with the ski trip and football experience to West Ham.

Mr Doggett has led assemblies all week to mark World Mental Health Day 2019. Students have also been following this up in mentor time by hearing real people in real situations being very open and honest about their own mental health and sharing how they have learnt to cope and manage it.

For more helpful resources about mental health, check out: www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/world-mental-health-day
